We would hang out, talk about music, all the things you do when you have a really close friend in music, and you’re sharing your musical ideas. So [Albert)] said, “Okay, here’s the deal. Al Kooper and Mike Bloomfield want you to go play on Super Session. And then, Cass Elliot’s people, they want you to come and play with their big, historically first rock show at Caesars Palace in Vegas. In the meantime, there’s a bunch of stuff going on and you gotta be very, very quiet about this, but Janis [Joplin] is leaving Big Brother. I want you to go out to California, hang out, play with her, whatever, start building this relationship. Because Skip, you put great bands together, and I know that you’ll put a sensational band together for her, and all I ask is that there’s no pressure on her. She comes in, picks up the microphone, and you guys are ready to go. Are you interested?” I said, yeah, sure. So I went out, I played The Live Adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper [recorded in September of 1968 with guests Carlos Santana and Elvin Bishop] at the Fillmore West [in San Francisco]. While I was out there, man, we did a ton of jamming. My next-closest friend was Steve Miller, and we ended up playing with Carlos during that period, we had a great time together. I hung out, did a lot of playing, got to know Janis really well.
